SUMMARY:Soil Carbon Science Webinar #11
DESCRIPTION:About the webinar\nAs droughts, heatwaves and rainfall extremes intensify, increasing carbon in soil has been proposed as a strategy to improve soil water availability and sustain crop production. However, the relationship between soil carbon, water and crop resilience is more complex than commonly assumed.\nThis webinar examines how SOC influences soil hydraulic properties, water infiltration, retention, redistribution and plant water availability under different climatic conditions. The webinar will draw on recent evidence from large-scale crop yield analyses and global hydrological modelling to show that SOC benefits depend on soil texture, rainfall patterns, and atmospheric water demand.\nThe webinar will discuss the opportunities and limitations of managing soil carbon for climate adaptation. Understanding these relationships is essential for developing realistic strategies that integrate soil carbon management, agricultural water use and climate resilience.\nDate: 16 Nov 2026 , 14:00 CET, 8:00 EST (USA)\nThe webinar will take place on ZOOM. Use this link to join: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/86215479318 ( https://us06web.zoom.us/j/86215479318 )\nMeet our speakers!\n\n\n\n\nDr. Alison E. King, University of Maine, USA \nDr. Alison King is a soil scientist at the University of Maine whose research focuses on soil organic matter, soil functionality and sustainable agricultural management. She combines soil characterisation, stable isotope techniques, and statistical modelling to investigate soil carbon dynamics and the relationships between soil properties, crop resource use and agricultural sustainability.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nProf. Dr. Edouard Davin, University of Bern and Wyss Academy for Nature, Switzerland \nProfessor Edouard Davin is a climate scientist specialising in land–atmosphere interactions, land-use change and climate modelling. He is Professor of Climate Scenarios for Sustainable Development at the University of Bern and Wyss Academy for Nature. His research examines how land management influences climate, water resources and ecosystem functioning. He served as a Lead Author of the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land.\n\n\n\n
